I would 100% recommend following a tour guide in the Vatican. Even if you think you know everything and even if you think you have the most perfect itinerary, a tour guide is essential on your first trip to the Vatican. I joined a tour group and it was the best tour of anything I have ever had in my life. In fact, it was probably the most informative, amazing, arty, historical, gasp-filled day in my life.
